In 2003, National Geographic Society’s headquarters became the first existing buildings in the U.S. to be LEED-EB certified. NGS has re-certified at the Silver level each year since then, until achieving LEED-EB Gold for 2007. The NGS Headquarters has additionally earned the Energy Star label for every year’s performance since 2006, placing these buildings in the top 25% of the most energy-efficient buildings in the USA. The NGS is also a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders and Green Power Partnership programs and WWF’s Climate Savers Program.
