Snake Slithering on the Ground

Photo: Burmese python slithering on the ground in Florida
The Burmese python doesn't appear in any field guide of the endemic reptiles of North America. But anyone in Florida who wants to see one of these Southeast Asian snakes in the wild need only drive the Everglades National Park road on a summer's eve. Captive pythons frequently escape or are released by their owners. In the wild, they can quickly dwarf the local wildlife, reaching 20 feet (6 meters) in length and growing as thick as a telephone pole.
